This typically occurs in older people due to damage to the macula of the retina. Symptoms include gradual worsening of vision, difficulty to drive, read, watch TV and can affect activities in daily life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Types of Macular Degeneration<\/strong><br \/>\nThere are two types, &#8216;wet&#8217; and &#8216;dry&#8217;. Dry macular degeneration causes gradual loss of central vision typically over several years. Wet macular degeneration causes rapid loss of central vision typically within weeks (or days) and if untreated can cause blindness within months. Unfortunately, dry AMD is progressive and the chance of switching to wet type increases annually.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stages of Macular Degeneration<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Early AMD \u2013 Most people do not experience vision loss in the early stage<\/li>\n<li>Intermediate AMD \u2013 There may be some blurred or distorted central vision. Eye exam will identify pigment changes, debris deposits or both in the retina<\/li>\n<li>Late AMD \u2013 Vision loss is more noticeable cause be significant damage to macula<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Treatment<\/strong><br \/>\nUnfortunately, dry AMD is not treatable but taking anti-oxidants in form of tablets may help in slowing down the progression of the disease in small proportion of patients.<br \/>\nOn the other hand, Anti-Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (anti-VEGF) injections can stabilise vision in wet AMD. Anti-VEGF medicines include Lucentis (Ranibizumab), Eylea (Aflibercept) and, sometimes Avastin (Bevacizumab)<br \/>\nThe anti-VEGF medicines are injected using a fine needle directly into the eye. Injections are generally needed every four weeks for up to two years. These measurements help with diagnosis and provide treatment guidance for glaucoma and retinal diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease.<br \/>\n<strong>Fundus Photography<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fundus photographs are used to display the appearance of the inside of the patient\u2019s eye including the retina. The photos are generally used to show damage to the retina that may be caused by glaucoma as well as diabetic retinopathy changes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pachymetry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Pachymeter helps determine the thickness of the cornea. This test is helpful in the management of glaucoma as well as certain disorders that can result in a loss of vision.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Visual Field Test<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Visual field is used to determine if a patient has a peripheral or central visual field defect. This information can help to determine if a patient has glaucoma, retinal problems, has had a stroke or if a patient has a brain tumor. By plotting the field of vision, the doctor is able to better diagnose and treat eye and health problems<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gonioscopy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gonio photography is used to manage patients that are suspected of or have been diagnosed with glaucoma.
